FQXi's 5th International Conference
If a Tree Falls: The Physics of What Happens and Who Is Listening

August 17-22, 2016
Banff, Canada
The Rimrock Resort Hotel

This conference is by invite only.

This conference will unite our current programs, "The Physics of the Observer", and "The Physics of What Happens". What is an observer in physics? What are the "events" we observe? What properties can observers and events have? What properties must they have? What is the fundamental connection between these observers, their observations, and the events that happen?

Subject areas covered at this interdisciplinary conference will span the range from quantum systems and to cosmology to artificial intelligence and consciousness, and many other points between and beyond. As with past FQXi meetings, location and schedule is optimized to maximize interaction between attendees, with ample time for organized and free discussion in an (awe-)inspiring environment.

The conference will take place August 17-22, 2016 nestled between mountains, providing gorgeous views of the Canadian Rockies. Our conference hotel is built into Sulphur Mountain in Banff National Park. The location provides something for everyone, ranging from easy walking trails to more adventurous hikes, gondola rides, hot springs, golfing, and much more. The conference program includes time for breakout sessions and group hikes or outdoor time each afternoon, so you will have plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature while pondering its laws. The sun sets around 9pm in Banff, so you’ll have opportunity to explore on your own, too.

We look forward to seeing you in Banff!
